The province of Lucca lies in northwestern Tuscany and stretches from the sandy beaches of Versilia across the plains around Lucca to the mountains of the Garfagnana and the Apuan Alps. Its capital is Lucca, with its completely preserved city walls. Around 380.000 people live in 33 municipalities – hardly any other province combines urban culture, beach holidays, and mountain hiking so closely.
You can walk or cycle along the tree-lined city walls that encircle the old town. The oval Piazza dell'Anfiteatro follows the outline of the Roman amphitheater, and holm oaks grow on the Torre Guinigi. Lucca is also the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini.
The Versilia coastal region, with Viareggio , Forte dei Marmi , and the artists' town of Pietrasanta, is the classic beach destination of northern Tuscany. The Puccini Festival takes place every summer in Torre del Lago on Lake Massaciuccoli.
Heading north in the Serchio Valley, the landscape becomes green and mountainous: the Apuan Alps beckon with marble peaks and hiking trails, and Monte Prado is the highest mountain in Tuscany. A particularly interesting destination is Fabbriche di Careggine , the village submerged in the Vagli reservoir.
The traditional spa town of Bagni di Lucca is located in the middle Serchio valley – more information can be found under Terme di Bagni di Lucca.
Getting there: Lucca is located on the A11 Florence–Pisa North motorway, while the Versilia region is on the A12 coastal motorway. Regional trains connect Florence to Viareggio via Prato, Pistoia, and Lucca. The nearest airport is Pisa, about 30 kilometers from Lucca.
Market days: Lucca (Wednesday and Saturday), Viareggio (Thursday), Forte dei Marmi (Wednesday), Torre del Lago (Friday), Pietrasanta (Thursday) – all dates can be found in the overview of markets in Tuscany . Motorhome travelers can find tips under Motorhome pitches in Tuscany.
