Remember that most motorways in Italy are toll roads. You can pay the toll at the respective toll stations at the motorway exits.
If you are coming from Switzerland, first head towards MILANO and bypass MILANO on the “Tangentiale Ovest”. Take the A1 towards PARMA / MODENA. Just before Parma, turn onto the A15 towards LA SPEZIA. Follow the A15 (it gets very hilly towards the end) until you reach the A12 just before La Spezia. Now you are already in Tuscany. Follow the A12 south, via Viareggio and Livorno to Cecina, where the toll A12 ends and joins the SS1, which continues to Grosseto .
In case you're over anyway FLORENCE drive, you can continue to follow the A1, then do not turn onto the A15 at PARMA.

If you are coming from Austria (Brenner route), take the route via Modena / Florence from the A22 on the A1:
