Popular beaches in Tuscany
Even if Tuscany is not necessarily perceived as a beach holiday destination, it can easily keep up with the Riviera.
From Marina di Carrara to Porto Santo Stefano there are wide beaches and wild coasts. The Tuscan coast begins in the north with the white sandy beaches of Versilia.
Seaside resorts like Marina di Carrara, Marina di Massa, and Forte dei Marmi not only boast prestigious names but also a wealth of beautiful beachfront hotels in all categories. Forte dei Marmi, with its pier extending far into the sea and its charming boutiques and cafés, is undoubtedly the most sophisticated spot on the Versilia coast and has the widest beaches. While these beaches, like everywhere in Italy, are managed by "bagnos"—small beach establishments that rent out sun loungers and parasols—they also offer drinks and snacks.
Viareggio, in the far south of Versilia, boasts its famous Passeggiata seafront promenade, home to the renowned Café Margherita, a favorite haunt of Puccini. Elsewhere, the seaside is dominated by magnificent Belle Époque hotels, while inland, the narrow streets wind their way around a permanent market in the center.
From Pisa to the Etruscan coast
Pisa's harbor silted up centuries ago, which is why the famous Leaning Tower has long since ceased to stand by the sea. Those seeking a beach holiday should head to Marina di Pisa at the mouth of the Arno River. The town boasts charming Art Nouveau houses, though the entry into the sea is rocky, but there's no beach access fee. Further south in Tirrenia lies a magnificent beach nestled behind a pine grove, and south of Livorno begins the Etruscan Coast with its renowned seaside resort of San Vincenzo . This region offers a range of accommodations, from cozy family hotels to spacious holiday homes right on the beach.
Porto Santo Stefano and the Maremma
In the far south of Tuscany lies the Maremma nature reserve . The region is known for its white cattle, the Maremma cowboys, and top-class designer wines. Those who prefer a more romantic beach holiday and want more than just five square meters of sand will find themselves in the perfect spot. Secluded coves, framed by untamed nature, attract individualists, just as the sophisticated seaside resort of Porto Santo Stefano draws the yachts of the jet set and, of course, many curious visitors who love romantic, picturesque hotels and fine restaurants along the coast.
