Farm holidays - agrotourism
Content
In Italy, a farm holiday is called agriturismo: you stay in rooms or apartments on a working farm – often with vineyards, olive groves, and a pool, nestled in the rolling hills. Tuscany is the number one region in Italy for this. Here you can find out what an agriturismo offers, which areas are suitable, and how to find the perfect farm.

What is an agriturismo?
An agriturismo is legally a working farm that accommodates guests. In Tuscany, regional law no. 30/2003 regulates agriturismos; agriculture must remain the primary activity. Many farms produce wine, olive oil , vegetables, or cheese and sell their products directly to guests; some are certified organic.
The holiday apartments are often located in renovated farmhouses, frequently featuring regional materials such as terracotta floors. Many farms have a pool, and children can meet animals like chickens, cats, or dogs. On farms near the forest, hikers might be lucky enough to encounter hares, foxes, or deer.
What can you expect there?
Hosts usually provide information folders with their tips: recommended trattorias, weekly markets , festivals, and museums in the area. Many farms offer wine tastings, olive oil tastings, or cooking evenings. Those interested in taking a cooking class can also find offers on GetYourGuide (cooking classes in Tuscany).
Popular regions for farm holidays
Chianti and Val d'Elsa
Between Florence and Siena, vineyards with holiday apartments lie close together – ideal for wine lovers and as a base for excursions to Florence, Siena and San Gimignano . More about the region: Chianti in the heart of Tuscany.
Val d'Orcia and southern Tuscany
Cypress-lined avenues, rolling hills, and wine villages like Montalcino and Montepulciano characterize the area south of Pienza . Thermal springs are also located nearby – see Thermal Baths of Tuscany.
Maremma
If you'd like to combine farm life with the beach, the Maremma is the place to be: many farms are just a short drive from the sea. You can find beach tips under " Sandy beaches of the Maremma".
Montalbano and Vinci
West of Florence , olive groves dot the slopes of Montalbano. In Vinci, the Museo Leonardiano, housed in the Castello dei Conti Guidi and the Palazzina Uzielli, displays models based on Leonardo's drawings; his birthplace is located a few kilometers away in Anchiano. Worthwhile excursions nearby include the ceramics town of Montelupo Fiorentino, the Grotta Giusti thermal cave in Monsummano Terme, and the leather factories and outlets in the lower Arno Valley.
