The story of the fairy tale character Pinocchio

The version by Collodi is about the toy maker Geppetto, who is given a talking log from his carpenter friend Antonio. Full of joy, Geppetto creates a doll from the piece of wood, which suddenly comes to life. He baptizes the little wooden boy with the name Pinocchio.

The living wooden doll quickly causes trouble for Geppetto. Because she skips school and prefers to chase after the pleasure instead. Here, the wooden boy is tricked mainly by liars and traders. In the end, Pinocchio admits his mistakes and transforms from a wooden doll into a real boy.

A peculiarity of the story is of course Pinocchio's nose, which gets longer and longer as soon as the wooden boy starts lying.

Why is Pinocchio called Pinocchio?

The character's name is composed of three Italian words: "pino" (pine/pine), "pinco" (fool) and "occhio" (eye). The story of the wooden puppet is regularly performed as a musical, play and opera.

In the German-speaking world, the children's book did not appear until 1905. In many countries around the world there were even postage stamps from the wooden doll on the Markt, in Germany they appeared in 2001. Behind the famous story there are a lot of educational lessons, for example that children should be hardworking or that lying has consequences.

Carlo Collodi, the author of the masterpiece

Carlo Collodi, who is actually called Carlo Lorenzini, comes from Colle di Val d'Elsa in Tuscany and lived from November 24, 1826 to October 26, 1890.

The self-proclaimed surname is derived from his mother's place of birth. Carlo also lived in the village of Collodi for a few years. The creator of Pinocchio was not only an author, but also a journalist and prefectural employee. Carlo had another brother named Ippolito Lorenzini. Unfortunately, Lorenzini did not achieve great success during his lifetime. It was only after his death that his novel The Adventures of Pinocchio became world famous. The writer was buried in the Cimitero delle Porte Sante.

Collidi - The home of Carlo Lorenzini

Carlo spent most of his childhood years in Collidi. The little village belongs to that Pistoia Province and is located in the Tuscany region. Nowadays the place of longing has only 3.408 inhabitants. There is so much to discover in Collidi. The ancient city layout in particular catches the tourists' eye immediately. The memorable houses forge breathtakingly down the slope here.

But the Villa Garzoni is also one of the most famous sights of the suburb. This four-storey baroque building from the 17th century is a very special eye-catcher. The Pinocchio Park is also a highlight in Collidi. This annually attracts numerous admirers of the fairytale character.

The Pinocchio Park

The Park of Pinocchio opened in 1956. This unique facility is equipped with masterpieces by various artists. The focus of the park is clearly on the history of Pinocchio.

In addition to art and architecture, the facility also offers a wide range of activities for the young, such as hand puppet performances, carousels and face painting. Botany lovers will also get their money's worth here.

The park also has a restaurant and a museum, which also deals with the famous wooden doll. A number of works of art, drawings, theatrical costumes and stage sets can be admired here. The park is simply a must for all fans of the classic Italian fairy tale.
