When is international health insurance worthwhile for Italy?

Contents

For citizens of the EU, all you need to enter Italy is your passport - you do not need a visa to stay in this country. If there is statutory health insurance in the Federal Republic of Germany, the benefits associated with this can also be used in Italy. However, this only applies if the benefits also fall under the Italian healthcare system.

If this is not the case, the services used must be paid for from your own financial resources. Thus, for example, patient return transport or private doctor treatment must be financed independently. In order to protect yourself from these quite high costs, it makes sense to take out good international health insurance for your stay in Italy, such as the TravelSecure® international health insurance.

The following article explains in which cases travel health insurance for Italy should not be waived and which risks holidaymakers in Italy should generally take into account.

Italy: In these cases, travel health insurance makes sense

Italy is characterized by an extremely impressive cultural and scenic diversity - for this reason the country is the perfect holiday destination for many people. However, many students and employees also decide to stay longer in Italy. But regardless of how long your stay in Italy is ultimately - a health problem can always occur.

A certain level of security is provided by the so-called social security agreement within the framework of existing statutory health insurance. The length of stay is irrelevant. The services that belong to the Italian health insurance system can thus be billed without any problems via the EHIC, i.e. the European Health Insurance Card.

However, there are also services that have to be paid for from your own financial resources. In order to prevent the entire holiday budget from being used up for this purpose, you should not forego taking out health insurance abroad even if you are staying in Italy. These will then also reliably cover the costs that go beyond the usual medical services.

The international health insurance for Italy should cover these benefits

As part of a good travel health insurance, comprehensive protection is created, whether in the event of a jellyfish burn or acute toothache. In principle, however, the contract should contain at least the following services:

  • Medical repatriation to the home country
  • Recovery and rescue in medically threatening situations
  • Repair of dentures and pain-relieving dental treatments
  • Medically necessary treatments and operations, both outpatient and inpatient
  • Assumption of the costs of aids and medicines in the event of acute illnesses

Are there special safety instructions for Italy to consider?

Basically, the security authorities in Italy state that there is always a risk of a terrorist attack. For this reason, security measures have been strengthened. There is an increased risk of terrorism particularly at religious sites.

Pickpockets and scams are the order of the day in Italy on the beaches and in the major tourist centers. The latter include, for example, alleged soiling of clothing, jostling or alleged flat tires. In addition, there are often burglaries in cars and mobile homes, some of which are even completely stolen.

It should also not be neglected that different forces of nature occur quite often in Italy, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, bush and forest fires or avalanches in winter.
