Siena is a city in Tuscany, which, with their unique brick buildings, also represent an architectural specialty in Italy. The lovingly renovated city center offers a variety of opportunities to discover the past and experience a varied break. The place is ideal to experience in a weekend and get to know the period environment.

Siena – a city in central Tuscany

Siena is located in the center of Tuscany. The region is on the Mediterranean Sea in the northern part of the boot. World famous cities are Florence and Pisa with the leaning tower, which is visited every year by numerous guests from all over the world. Siena is a smaller city, but the place is no longer an insider tip. Especially among lovers of architecture, culture and the fascinating History Siena is extremely popular in Italy. Since it is not a big city, it can be very well discovered in a weekend.

What to see in Siena

Anyone who likes Siena is convinced that the small town is the most beautiful city in Italy. In the heart lies the square Piazza Il Campo. Not only is it extremely lively there: Twice a year, equestrian sports lovers come together on the square and follow “Il Pallo”, one of the most famous horse races, which has made a name for itself far beyond the borders of Italy. The square also offers lovingly restored houses and a particularly rustic atmosphere. From there, the city center can be explored very well. It has the shape of a fan, on the edge are some of Siena's most important monuments. These include the Palazzo Pubblico. This is the town hall built in the Gothic style. The narrow Torre del Mangia can also be found on the square. It is a 14th-century tower that rises above the city with its white crown. Climbing the tower is rewarded with a magnificent view over the city. The panoramic view allows a first orientation. Siena is made up of 17 historical districts, these are called Contrade. You can see them very well from the tower. When walking through the city, the narrow streets and the palaces that come from the medieval buildings are striking.

Arrival to Siena

There are various ways of getting to Siena from Germany. The journey by car is quite long, especially from the north and east of Germany. The journey from Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg is less strenuous. However, there are alternatives to the car that are not only convenient but also cheap. So it is possible to travel by train or long-distance bus to Siena in Tuscany. There are direct connections to Tuscany from various larger cities. This applies to both train and bus connections. The buses go directly from Germany to Tuscany without stopping in between. This means that this direct connection allows for comfortable and relaxed travel.

Reach Siena by train

Alternatively, it is possible by train to Siena to drive. Tickets can be booked from various larger German train stations. Depending on the place of departure, a transfer may be necessary. However, arriving by train is also very relaxed compared to traveling by car. It is possible to read or relax and arrive rested at the destination. Compared to traveling by long-distance bus, the train offers more freedom of movement. It is possible to stretch your legs or have a snack in the on-board restaurant. Transfer to your accommodation in Siena can be organized on site by bus or taxi. Booking a rental car is also an option. However, it is only worth it if, in addition to exploring the city, there are plans to discover the surroundings. A car is not necessary in Siena as all sights can easily be reached on foot.
