With the camper in Tuscany

Contents

Tuscany is one of the most popular holiday regions in Italy for Germans, and can be easily reached via the motorway in around seven hours by car from Munich to Florence. If you take the direct route via Mittenwald, Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass, it is a good idea to make a stopover at Lake Garda, which you pass via the A22. It is recommended to take the Lago di Garda Nord (Riva) exit and then drive south along one of the two sides of the river. For a better view, we recommend the east side below Monte Baldo; the tunneled west side offers more adventure.

Before continuing on to Modena and Bologna Florence Verona is still worth a visit, as it has one of the most beautiful Roman amphitheaters to offer with its arena. If you are adventurous and would like to take a detour to Milan in the west or Venice in the east, you should plan at least one or two more days to be able to enjoy these beautiful cities in all their beauty.

Car and caravan, tent or mobile home?

This question certainly depends very much on the individual preferences and possibilities that you bring with you as a camping holidaymaker. Not everyone can or wants to afford a mobile home, although there is of course the possibility of renting one from around 100 euros a day, depending on the equipment and size. As comfortable and easy as the journey itself is with such a mobile home, mobility is impractical once you have set up camp on site. In order to go on site visits or to be mobile, you either have to pack everything up again every time or you have a two-wheeler with you that requires additional space, if it is not a practical one folding bike at a hunt.

If you prefer to drive your own car and have a caravan attached to your trailer hitch, or if you are not afraid of sleeping in a tent, you will certainly have a clear advantage when it comes to flexibility on site. A caravan is also much cheaper to buy and maintain, but such a combination is not for everyone, as it requires a lot more caution and concentration from the driver on the journey. Those who prefer to use a tent and are not afraid of the loss of comfort not only save money, but also fuel.

Which places are worth visiting?

Tuscany is one of them most popular camping destinations of the Germans and is therefore about as popular as the French Atlantic coast. The region offers numerous even free ones plots, which are particularly suitable for campers. These include Panzano in the northern Chianti wine region, Vinci – world famous thanks to Leonardo da Vinci – or Pisa, which with its leaning tower is not only known to Germans. If you prefer an island feeling and the sea, this is the one for you Elba-Island suggested in the Tuscan archipelago.

The capital, Florence, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982 and is one of the forty most visited cities worldwide, with over four million visitors. It is also known for Michelangelo or Galileo Galilei and is the eighth largest city in Italy with around 375.000 inhabitants. The region around Montepulciano is also known for its good wine, which is also... olive oil is one of the region's most important sources of agricultural revenue. But also cities like Arezzo, Grosseto or Livorno are among the country's important stops.

What else you should know

From Wild camping is explicitly discouraged in the region, as the selection of campsites is very large and the controls are very strict. High fines starting at 500 euros are absolutely not uncommon here. The drinking water quality is usually good and you can drink the tap water without hesitation, it is definitely suitable for cooking without any problems. The liquid gas supply is guaranteed, even if the smaller bottles up to 3 kg are more common than the 5 or 11 kg containers that are common in Germany. A collection set with different adapters should therefore be carried along.

A camping holiday in Tuscany is definitely worthwhile and offers the camper heart a large selection of different places that are absolutely worth getting to know. The heritage and landscapes of Tuscany are simply breathtaking.
