Worthwhile detour in the Maremma
Grosseto certainly can't compare to Florence , Pisa , Siena , Pienza , or San Gimignano , as all of these cities are UNESCO World Heritage Sites or parts thereof. Nevertheless, Grosseto, with its medieval city center, possesses a unique charm and is one of the larger and more important cities in the Maremma region of southern Tuscany, very close to the sea. For anyone in the area, a visit is well worth it.
Traces of changeable history
Grosseto still has an almost completely preserved city wall from the mid-16th century, the construction of which goes back to the initiative of the Medici, who came into possession of Grosseto after an eventful episode around 1559. The old town is largely traffic-calmed and offers small restaurants, cafes and shops that invite you to stroll.
A special attraction in Piazza Dante is the cathedral, which has architectural elements from the 13th century, but also from the 19th century when it was renovated. Nearby is the Palazzo della Provincia with the statue of Leopold II, the Grand Duke of Tuscany (d. January 29.01.1870, XNUMX). Leopold II made sure that the swamps around Grosseto were drained so that the then rampant malaria could be contained. Also noteworthy is the mighty Medici fortress, which points to the troubled times of that time.
Otherwise, Grosseto is known for its Etruscan and Roman ruins and exhibitions. Two museums at Piazza Baccarini 3 are dedicated to the history of Grosseto and display exhibits from Etruscan, Roman, and ecclesiastical history.

When does Mark take place in Grosseto?
Anyone who loves shopping shouldn't miss the market in Grosseto. It takes place every Thursday morning from around 9:00 am. Outside the pedestrian zone, you can usually find a parking space, from which the city center is a relatively easy short walk away.
