From Livorno to Cecina

With around 160.000 inhabitants, Livorno is the largest city on the Tuscan coast. From here you can quickly reach the city of Florence via Pontedera, San Miniato and Empoli. The large trading port dominates the cityscape of Livorno. From the ferry port you can reach other destinations such as Corsica, Sicily, or even North Africa. In Livorno Italian naval officer candidates are also trained. The old town of Livorno initially surprises with its many canals, which one would expect to find in Venice. Although much was destroyed in the Second World War and had to be rebuilt, the churches and the cathedral dedicated to Francis of Assisi are worth a second look. A variety of museums, a market hall from 1894, two fortress buildings and many other sights such as the Monument to the Four Moors, the city's landmark, complete the picture. Livorno is particularly suitable for shopping. It's also always recommended to visit one of Livorno's seafood restaurants and stroll along the nine-kilometer-long seafront promenade, the highlight of which is the gleaming white Terrazza Mascagni.

From Livorno we continue via Rosignano Marittimo to Cecina. Rosignano Marittimo initially seems unattractive due to the silhouette of the soda factory. However, this belies the fact that there is a popular bathing beach in the Rosignano Solvay district. The beach a little further south in the Vada district is also very popular; it is also called the “Caribbean of Italy” because of its white sand (it is debated whether there is a connection between the soda factory and the exceptionally light color of the sand). There are also several campsites here. In addition, traditional folklore events and festivals regularly take place in Rosignano Marittimo and its districts.

The city of Cecina with its beach Marina di Cecina in the suburb of Cecina Mare is directly connected to Vada. A nature reserve extends to the south. Large parts of today's area of Cecina could also only be won by draining the extensive swamps in the last few centuries. So it happens that the city is actually still quite young, it was only founded in 1852. For day trippers, a late evening trip to the bars of Cecina Mare is worthwhile.
Cecina is the gateway into the interior, where you can visit the famous tower city via Volterra San Gimignano in the Chianti area.
