General information about arrival

If you want to travel to Tuscany with your dog, you should not only pay attention to the travel conditions but also the applicable regulations when entering Italy and through the transit countries.

Within the EU, the pet must be identified with a microchip. The blue pet ID card is also required.
Both are available from the vet, who can also advise on further questions about animals and travel.

In Italy, proof of rabies vaccination is also required. There is also an obligation to carry a leash and muzzle. Leashes are compulsory when traveling through Austria. This generally applies to all public places and rest areas during the journey.
In general, it is advisable to speak to the vet and call the consulate of Italy before the trip, as regulations change at short notice.

It can get very warm in Tuscany and on the journey there. Therefore, sufficient fresh water should be provided. It is also helpful to have a dog blanket on which the animal can lie when visiting restaurants.

Accommodations with dogs

Dog behavior on the beach

In Tuscany, the number of dog beaches is increasing. The beaches are a true paradise for animal lovers and four-legged friends. Dogs are also allowed to run and swim freely here. Exact rules can be found on boards directly on the beaches.

A special beach recommendation is located in the south of San Vincenzo on the Etruscan Coast. Fuorirotta Beach is one of the most beautiful dog beaches in Tuscany and is located directly between the two towns of Castiglione della Pescaia and Marina di Grosseto. The beach club of the same name also welcomes dogs and always strives for their well-being.
An approximately 200 m long stretch of beach belongs directly to the lido. Along the area there is a hustle and bustle of all possible dog breeds. Locals also like to come here for an early or late walk.
The shady parking lot is practical. This is about 15 minutes walk from the beach bar. The path leads through a beautiful pine forest.
For a few cents you can also use a freshwater shower specially installed for four-legged friends. Leihheimer are also available, which you can fill with water and take to the beach. The refill is free.

Best time to travel

The best time with dog and car is from March to June and then again in September. During these periods the weather is stable and not too hot. Especially in the summer holidays, the beaches are often overcrowded, so you should avoid the holiday periods with animals. It is generally advisable to take an inflatable paddling pool with you. This ensures regular refreshment.

Tips for excursions with dogs in Tuscany

A perfect city for dog lovers due to its many green spaces is Lucca in northern Tuscany. You can take a wonderful walk along the shady and intact city wall, which is approx. 4,2 km long. Cycling with a dog is also possible here. From here you have a wonderful view of the streets of Lucca and can therefore combine sightseeing with a walk.

Located directly on the city wall behind the old town, there is a wide green or lawn area - perfect for running and throwing a ball.
Dog bag devices can be found at regular intervals on the city wall. Also at fountains with fresh Drinking water is not missing in Lucca!

bars and restaurants

Dogs are part of the cityscape in Lucca. Furry noses can be found everywhere in the city. They are also welcome in most bars and restaurants. Sufficient water is always provided here.
