Siena

Nestled in the hills and valleys of the Sienese Chianti - an area dominated by medieval hilltop towns - Siena offers a wonderfully preserved example of the Tuscan Middle Ages.

The city is home to many Gothic palaces, churches, and museums that are filled with Gothic art. The Palio delle Contrade, which dates back to 1310, is an annual horse race that takes part in 10 of the city's 17 contrade (districts). As the highlight of the most spectacular festival in Italy, the biggest race takes place on August 16; a smaller race will be held on July 2nd.

In the vicinity of Radda in Chianti, wineries such as Castello di Volpaia and Badia a Coltibuono are worth seeing detours for wine and olive oil lovers. If you drive northwest of Siena in the direction of San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, one of the best preserved fortified villages in Italy, dominates the view.

Arezzo

As one of the wealthiest cities both in Tuscany and in all of Italy, stands out Arezzo not only for its beauty, but also for its outstanding collection of important Renaissance art and architecture. The frescoes by Piero della Francesca in the church of San Francesco are almost unique in their beauty.

If jewelry is on your shopping list, then you've come to the right place: Arezzo has long been known for its jewelry industry. Whether you're staying north or south of Arezzo, there are plenty of day trips. Simple day trips lead, for example, to Cortona, Montepulciano, Siena and the heart of Chianti Classico.
